11/11/07 Update: Loose Change Final Cut has just been released and so we have not prepared a full debunking. Both James and I have many comments about the movie below and I started a thread over at JREF with some examples of mistakes in the film. Much of the rest of the information in this particular post concerns the earlier versions of Loose Change.

Because this blog is getting so much traffic from Google searches and referrals from various forums and Wikipedia, we decided to put one post up top to link to information our newest visitors are apparently looking for.

First, if you have not seen the film and want to watch it, be sure to watch Markyx's annotated version, which he very kindly named after this blog, Screw Loose Change. Markyx did a terrific job on this, and we strongly recommend watching this version rather than Dylan Avery's cut.

I compiled three very easily refuted lies in the movie. I also showed three tricks and distortions that are used throughout the film.

A friend of the blog named Mark Roberts (aka Gravy at the JREF forums) compiled this amazing Viewer's Guide to Loose Change, (now HTML) which includes a complete transcript of the movie, pictures and links that refute many of the claims, and which highlights the changes between Version 1 and Version 2.

The hot new film in 9-11 Denial is called 9-11 Mysteries. One of our JREF buddies, The Doc, has put together a rebuttal video called (you guessed it!) Screw 9-11 Mysteries, and assembled a viewers' guide to 9-11 Mysteries.

Many 9-11 Deniers focus on the collapse of World Trade Center 7, which fell at 5:20 PM on September 11, almost seven hours after the North Tower. I have devoted a fair amount of research to the topic of WTC 7. If you want a really detailed analysis of WTC 7, I recommend Mark Robert's WTC 7 and the Lies of the 9/11 Truth Movement.

If you'd like to discuss the ideas about 9-11 you've encountered here or elsewhere, another friend of the blog started a Screw Loose Change Forum. It's a very lively place with lots of opinion back and forth between both sides. There's also a Screw Loose Change MySpace page, with some animated commentary. Of course, we also welcome comments on our posts.

If you're looking for detailed rebuttals of other aspects of 9-11 Denial, I heartily recommend 9-11 Myths, Debunking 9-11 and Internet Detectives.

Markyx has also put together a video (note: graphic images and strong language) called 9-11 Deniers Speak. If you think Dylan Avery and Jim Fetzer have any respect for the victims of 9-11, just watch this film. There are five parts. Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V.

This should be enough to get you started debunking Loose Change to your friends. We have a lot more content below this post.

LIHOP: Let It Happen On Purpose; theory that the government knew the 9-11 attacks were coming but allowed them to happen to further other goals of theirs. MIHOP: Made It Happen On Purpose; theory that the government planned and orchestrated the attacks. Most Truthers are MIHOP.

Debunkers took advantage of the situation to tie "9/11 Truthers" and William Rodriguez in particular, to the lawsuit. One example is this post at DemocraticUnderground.com;

9/11 Truther Lawyer - Philip Berg - Files Suit Alleging Obama Disqualified

Nice. The only problem is that Mr. Berg has not been William's lawyer for about two years.

In the film Zero: 9/11, the producers also made a mistake by billing Mr. Berg as William's lawyer as well. When William was interviewed for the film, he was not advised that Mr. Berg was being billed as such.

I was just watching MSNBC, and some 9/11 crackpot was holding up a sign that says "9/11 Was An Inside Job." Man these crackpots are persistent.

I think it's Alex in the background of the MSNBC broadcast with his trusty bullhorn. I'm waiting for them to get "repressed".:D...

The Financial Times and the “Self-Confessed Mastermind of 9/11”

In recent days there is mounting evidence of the advance of totalitarianism in the political and media mainstream. The entire Western world, led by the United States, has embraced a Georgian regime, which invaded South Ossetia totally demolishing its capital city of 50,000 residents, assassinated 1500 men, women and children and dozens of Russian peace keepers. The US has mobilized a naval and air armada off the Iranian coast, prepared to annihilate a country of 70 million people. The New York Times published an essay by a prominent Israeli historian, which advocates the nuclear incineration of Iran. All the major mass media have mounted a systematic propaganda campaign against China, supporting each and every terrorist and separatist group, and whipping up public opinion in favor of launching a New Cold War. There is little doubt that this new wave of imperial aggression and bellicose rhetoric is meant to deflect domestic discontent and distract public opinion from the deepening economic crises.

The Financial Times (FT), once the liberal, enlightened voice of the financial elite (in contrast to the aggressively neo-conservative Wall Street Journal) has yielded to the totalitarian-militarist temptation. The feature article of the weekend supplement of August 16/17, 2008 – “The Face of 9/11” – embraces the forced confession of a 9/11 suspect elicited through 5 years of hideous torture in the confines of secret prisons. To make their case, the FT published a half-page blow-up photo first circulated by former CIA director George Tenet, which presents a bound, disheveled, dazed, hairy ape-like prisoner. The text of the writer, one Demetri Sevastopulo, admits as much: The FT owns up to being a propaganda vehicle for a CIA program to discredit the suspect while he stands trial based on confessions obtained through torture.

All I can say is that the reviewer is overly credulous:

The Italian production company Telemaco has collated testimony which suggests that officials are lying about the events surrounding 9/11. The attacks, according to those heavy-weight sages Gore Vidal and Dario Fo, simply cannot be true. The inflammable evidence is this: an orange dropped from the top of the World Trade Centre would have hit the bottom only a second earlier than the top floor – supposedly impossible unless the building was rigged with military-grade plastic explosives.

There's a compound word for that, and the first part is bull. First, although several sources do claim the South Tower fell in about 10 seconds, that is simply a misreading of the seismic data. Debris was pelting the ground enough to measure on the Richter scale for about 10 seconds. My best estimate of the collapse times for each tower is in the 15-20 second range; it's hard to be more precise than that due to the dust obscuring the very end of the collapse.

As for those heavy-weight sages Gore Vidal and Dario Fo, they are out of the fields where they have any claim to sagehood. Fo, in particular, acts like a buffoon throughout the film. I have not spent any real time on this film because it seems like a throwback to Loose Change I; emphasizing the "16-foot" hole in the Pentagon, for example, by showing (over and over again) that picture with the spray from the fire engine obscuring the first floor.

One thing I have noticed. Although in the US, the "Truthers" are composed of about 50% leftists and 25% libertarian/survivalist types like Alex Jones, with a small percentage of paleocons of the Karen Johnson stripe and the rest defying characterization politically, in Europe the movement seems pretty much confined to the loony left. Fo, of course, is way out on the left; one of his most recent plays is Peace Mom, about Cindy Sheehan.

As a high-profile 9/11 truther you may arguably be able to actually have MORE of an effect with this cause than you would have in the restrained PC, taboo-forbidden, controlled nature of the halls of our U.S. Senate.
