The Shell Game by Steven R Alten
The story opens in 2007 when two CIA spooks meet with an American Colonel in military intelligence. The war is going badly, and President Bush, who steadfastly refuses to back down, remains unchallenged at home as Democrats and Republicans continue to toss verbal grenades positioning themselves for the 2008 elections. Meanwhile, Iran s pursuit of nuclear energy will yield enriched uranium within five years, uranium that can be used to manufacture suitcase nukes. The United States military is too drained to invade Iran, and a preemptive strike is out of the question, unless a nuclear detonation were to occur in an American city, the enriched uranium traced back to Iran. A U.S. reprisal would strike a death-blow against radical Islam, quell the insurgent violence in Iraq, and yield more oil. Yes, the cost is unthinkable but if we sit back and do nothing then one day a dozen suitcase bombs could go off in a dozen American cities bringing with it anarchy and the collapse of Western civilization.
December 2011: Ashley Ace Futrell is an oil expert working for PetroConsultants, married to Kelli Doyle, a former National Security Advisor and one of the CIA spooks from the opening scene. When Kelli threatens to expose the plot, Ace finds his existence hurtling down a rabbit s hole of deceit where the orchestrated lies of the powerful few could lead to the darkest days of human existence, and the death knell for billions.

Tsunami Books Crashes
by Jim Milliot -- Publishers Weekly, 4/10/2007 1:19:00 PM
The independent publisher Tsunami Books is closing
down and selling off the inventory of the only two
books it published, The Loch and Meg, both by Steve
Alten. Tsunami was founded in 2004 by Creative
Entertainment Services to publish high concept books,
but after some success with the Alten novels, and a
few other books signed up, it decided to focus on its
music operations, a spokesperson said.
Alten has had several different publishers since he
first published Meg with Bantam in 1997, publishing
one title with Kensington and four with Tor/Forge.
Alten now has the rights to all his books and has just
finished a new novel, The Shell Game. "I just want to
find a steady home," Alten said. He remains optimistic
that New Line Cinema, which has an option on Meg,
will soon greenlight the project.

Tsunami Books, a new publishing company based in
Mayfield Heights, isn't trying to be the biggest fish
in the literary sea. It's just looking for some titles
that will make waves with the book-buying public.
The company is the first unit of a new venture called
Cooperative Entertainment Services - bankrolled by
local entrepreneur and philanthropist Ed Davidson - to
get up and running. Bob Bellin, CEO of Tsunami, said
the company's plan is to publish "high-concept''
titles written by authors whose books once graced the
influential New York Times Best-Seller List but no
longer hit such lofty heights. It's a big plus, Mr.
Bellin said, if the books are suited to "multiple
entertainment formats,'' including feature films and CD-ROMs.
"We're committed to creating profitable enterprises
out of underutilized brands,'' said Mr. Bellin, who
from 1996 to 1998 was general manager at rock station
WMMS-FM, 100.7.

NEW YORK, June 1,2005, /PRNewswire/ -- One week after
new independent publishing company, Tsunami Books,
purchased the domestic and foreign rights to Steve
Alten's NY Times best-seller, MEG; A Novel of Deep
Terror, New Line Cinema (Lord of the Rings) announced
it has optioned dramatic rights, fast-tracking
the action thriller as a July 4th, 2006 release, to be
directed by Jan De Bont (Twister).
MEG, first published by Bantam-Doubleday in 1997,
is the first in a series about Carcharodon megalodon,
the 70-foot prehistoric cousin of the Great White
shark. The novel hit all best-seller lists, including
#19 on the NY Times, with BDD optioning the foreign
rights to over twenty countries. Despite these
accolades, Bantam unexpectedly cancelled the second
part of Alten's two book deal just weeks before German
entertainment giant, Bertlesman, took over the
company. Hollywood Pictures, which had optioned MEG's
dramatic rights, also went through a changing of the
guard and the option was canceled. The two lost
transactions cost the author over $1.5 million. "It
was a nightmarish roller coaster ride," says Alten,
whose sales on his subsequent books began dropping
after he switched to two different publishing houses,
first Kensington (The TRENCH) then Tor/Forge (Domain,
Goliath, Resurrection, and MEG; Primal Waters).
"Ultimately it was a valuable lesson that made me a
better writer, unfortunately, while my books kept
getting better, my publicity continued diminishing,
affecting book sales ... and my paycheck."
Looking to break out of that cycle, Alten met with
Ed Davidson, Chairman of Cooperative Entertainment
Services in Ohio, who was interested in adding a
publishing entity to his holdings. They agreed
Alten's seventh novel, The LOCH, would make an ideal
debut novel for Tsunami Books, a boutique publisher
that will specialize in high concept books that
possess strong marketing hooks and movie potential.
"The Loch's a real page-turner," says Tsunami CEO Bob
Bellin. "Reviews have been fantastic, and we've just
completed an option deal with an Emmy-nominated
documentary producer who wants to make a two-hour
television special based solely on the cutting-edge
science woven into the story." Hollywood producer
David Foster (The Thing, Mask of Zorro) has
already optioned the thriller's motion picture rights.
Alten knew studio interest was heating up again
for MEG 's dramatic rights, but it was actually his
non-profit program, Adopt-An-Author, that
convinced Tsunami to step in and help purchase MEG
back from Bantam. "Adopt-An-Author has added almost a
thousand new high school teachers into the program
this year alone," says Alten, the program's founder
and director. "If Tsunami controlled the publishing
rights, I felt we could do more to assist
our teachers. The Davidson's were one of the program's
original sponsors, so I knew Ed would see the
opportunity. The movie deal was major icing on the cake."
Alten has since reedited and expanded MEG, which
will be re-released in mass-market paperback (ISBN
0-9761659-1-0) in July 2005. Look for a new cover
with a T-Rex being devoured by a Megalodon. As the
movie date approaches, another version will be
released, containing actual movie photos.
Meanwhile The Loch debuted in May as #9 on
Ingram's best-seller list, with a major publicity push
still to come. And big sales are expected for MEG
when the movie hits theaters. All in all, not a bad debut
for a new publisher ...and a persevering author whose
roller coaster career looks like it's again on the rise.
Tsunami Books will be exhibiting at the Book Expo
America in NYC June 3-5, 2005, at the Jacob Javits
Convention Center in booth #2656.

New Line Cinema Brings "Meg" to Life
From Tsunami Books
70', 70,000 Pound Shark Attacks Theaters in 2006
CLEVELAND, April 25, 2005 - Independent publisher
Tsunami Books has purchased the domestic and foreign
rights to novelist Steve Alten's best seller "MEG"
from Bantam Books. The title, about the prehistoric
cousin of the great white shark, is set to be
re-released in June 2005 with enhanced scenes and a
newly designed cover.
The fictional tale of the 70-foot, 70,000 pound
"Carcharodon Megalodon" is now on the fast track at
New Line Cinema using Alten's screenplay and Jan de
Bont ("Twister," "Speed") attached to direct. New Line
acquired the rights to "MEG" from Hollywood Pictures,
which optioned the novel around the time of its first
publishing in 1996. Production on the project, which
has been billed as "Jurassic Shark," is slated for
Fall with a target theatrical debut set for Summer 2006.
"I'm excited about this new development and look
forward to working more closely with Tsunami," states
Alten. "This was my first novel and it's great to be
able to go back and tighten the writing. If you think
you enjoyed 'MEG' before, this version will turn your
hair white."
"MEG" marks Tsunami's second project with Alten, the
first being the debut of Alten's 7th novel, "The
Loch," which will be released on May 1, 2005. Veteran
producer David Foster ("The Thing" "Mask of Zorro")
has already optioned the tale of the fabled Loch Ness Monster.
"At Tsunami we look for projects and authors with
multiple opportunities in mind," states Bob Bellin,
CEO of Tsunami Books.
"Steve is such a compelling writer and both 'MEG' and
'The Loch' have feature film written all over them."

The LOCH' Publisher Offers Bounty for Monster's Missing Tooth
MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio, 08/11/05 /PRNewswire/ --
Tsunami Books has joined in a real-life hunt for a
missing 4-inch tooth that some experts believe may
offer the first DNA evidence that proves the existence
of a large predatory creature in Scotland's fabled
Loch Ness. Tsunami is the independent publisher that
made its debut this summer with N.Y. Times
best-selling author Steve Alten's The LOCH, a
modern-day thriller about the hunt for the Loch Ness
Monster. The tooth in question was discovered by two
American college students on Spring Break, pried loose
from a mutilated deer carcass along a Loch Ness
deepwater shoreline known to local fishermen as a
"kill zone." The tooth was later confiscated by a
water bailiff, along with some of the students' film.
One video tape was alvaged, its footage located at:
http://www.lochnesstooth.com/
Alten's novel has been receiving high praise from both
reviewers and members of the scientific community.
Robert McCord, Chief Curator of Natural History &
paleontology at Mesa Southwest Museum called the
biology behind the story "more credible than many
so-called non-fiction books about Loch Ness." But it
was not until this week that Alten's publisher
officially decided to get involved in the breaking
story in Scotland.
"Without the tooth, there's simply no way of telling
if this is real or a hoax," says Robert Bellin,
Tsunami's President. "Steve researched his novel for
two years, then worked extensively with forensic
investigator Bill McDonald to get the science in The
LOCH right. We've been watching this story carefully,
hoping the tooth would eventually be released to
British scientists, but it's become obvious the
Highland Authority isn't interested in cooperating.
McDonald had commitments of just over $100,000 in
reward money for information leading to the return of
the tooth and has made some headway, but we decided to
take a different tact, asking a pool of scientists,
curators and cryptozoolgists to render their opinion
from photos taken of the tooth. When we heard the
results, we decided to toss our own hat into the ring."
Late last week several of these experts confirmed the
missing tooth could indeed match the palate tooth of a
fifty-foot creature... the SAME creature described in
Alten's novel. Tsunami has upped the reward to
$200,000, and is offering a cash reward of $10,000 to
the first fisherman who catches an Anguilla or Conger
eel that measures over six feet in length! It is a
massive mutation of this species that Alten (and other
researchers) believe inhabits Loch Ness and other
freshwater lakes.
"If it is a tooth," says Alten, "I honestly don't
think the Highland Authority will release it. They've
invested an incredible amount of time and money
perpetrating the myth of an extinct marine reptile
(plesiosaur) being Nessie, and tourism generates far
too much money in the Highlands to give that up. The
particular creature I described in The LOCH is a
species that prefers the depths, and most likely
wouldn't surface by day. That sort of ruins it for
monster hunting tourists."
According to several locals when the creature does
surface it's at night, and usually in the winters when
food runs scarce. "This winter I met with no less than
a dozen locals who told me about land sightings along
the shoreline," says McDonald. "Two eyewitnesses to a
sighting took me back to the area where we discovered,
frozen in the mud, slide tracks of an animal that had
to be at least fifty to sixty feet long, weighing
upwards of eight tons!"
Tsunami Books has commissioned a life-size skull made
to fit the dimensions of the animal identified by its
4-inch tooth. Bellin says the replica skull will be of
museum quality and measure approximately five feet in
length. "We'll be bringing the skull and a replica
tooth to New York City in late September," Bellin
said. "Naturally we hope to use it to publicize The
LOCH and the events at Loch Ness. We've also added a
petition to our website (http://www.theloch.com/)
where people can add their voice to the issue. Our
goal is a million e-mail signatures. We feel that kind
of attention would force the Highland Government into
finally releasing the confiscated tooth."
The LOCH was released this summer and is available in
bookstores. A special document entitled The Science
Behind The Loch is available to download at
http://www.theloch.com/ along with more information
and links to the student's video footage. To arrange
